Donald McCann, Class of 1956

Donald Lee McCann was welcomed home to the Lord on July 20, 2023, three days before his 89th Birthday. Through his final moments, Don showed steadfast faith and contentment in the Lord and a love for his wife Dorothy, family, church community, and friends.

Don was born in Mt. Vernon, IL on July 23, 1934, to Everett and Mary McCann. He was the oldest of two children, followed by a brother David. He attended and graduated from Mr. Vernon Township High School in 1952, where he excelled in both academics and athletics. Don was a member of the National Honor Society, Vice President of his Senior Class, and a member of the varsity football and basketball teams. In his senior year, the varsity basketball team placed 3rd in the IL state basketball tournament.

After high school, Don attended Millikin University in Decatur, IL. He was a member of the SAE fraternity, played on the university basketball team, and was president of the Senior Class. Don graduated in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Don entered the U.S. Army in February 1957 as a radio and teletype operator. He was a Private in the 365th Field Artillery Battalion stationed in Baumholder Germany for 17 months.

He spent his entire professional career with Illinois Bell and Ameritech, starting in 1959 in Decatur, IL and later moving to Chicago. Don retired in 1994 after 37 years with the company.
