Campers to engage in chemistry experiments and explore common techniques used by chemists, biochemists
Millikin University will host a hands-on learning Chemistry and Biochemistry Camp for junior high and high school students from Monday, July 25 to Thursday, July 28, 2022. The camp will run 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. each day in the Leighty-Tabor Science Center on Millikin University's campus.
All campers will receive a laboratory coat, lab notebook and safety glasses. During the camp, students will engage in chemistry experiments and explore some common techniques used by chemists and biochemists to answer questions. The camp will conclude with a demonstration dinner on the evening of Thursday, July 28 for families and teachers.
Dr. Anne Rodriguez, associate professor of chemistry at Millikin, is teaching the camp to help students discover the fun of lab science and improve lab skills. "This camp is hands-on and does not require previous experience or course work in chemistry. Campers directly explore the performance learning that is embedded in Millikin University's Chemistry program, where all majors complete a research project," she said.
Dr. Rodriguez understands that it can be challenging to see oneself in these disciplines or with limited laboratory experience.
Dr. Rodriguez noted, "I want to give young people experience with and exposure to chemistry and biochemistry. I hope it encourages a diverse array of young people to move into college as biochemistry or chemistry majors."
