Areas of Study

  • Why English?

The questions isn't “What can I do with an English degree?” Rather, it’s: “What can’t I do with an English degree?”

Students who major in English can focus on writing, education or English Studies. But a degree in English from Millikin University is much broader than that — students across all three majors undertake an educational journey through great works of the past; explore intriguing writings of the present; and gain the preparation they need to write, edit, publish, or teach in the future.

    And when they graduate?

Our English majors go on to be poets and authors, newspaper and magazine journalists, editors, publishers, teachers, professors, lawyers, technical communicators, copywriters, corporate analysts, human resource managers, librarians, grant writers, program managers. You name it.

What prepares them for such diverse careers?

It's their time studying English at Millikin — in particular, the blend of theory and Performance Learning our coursework is known for, the many opportunities students have to get published from their first semester on campus, and myriad other ways students get involved during their time at Millikin.
